Model
Aviators
Association
The Model Aviators Association (MAA) was launched by our President at the Plumpton Model Show in August 1997. The MAA was formed by a group of modellers with the interests of aero-modellers in mind and the promotion of model flying in the wake of the Model Pilots Association (MPA). This time it was to be an independent association, with a committee and group members dedicated to helping others to learn to fly.
The
aims and objectives of the MAA are to promote, encourage and develop all
aspects
of model aviation. So who better to
have as a life president than David Boddington who has probably done more for
aero-modelling in the country than any other individual?
He has been an editor of numerous modelling magazines and has written
many books on various aero-modelling subjects.
He has also introduced many newcomers to the hobby of model aviation and
has been involved with films and television drama series.
The
MAA have our own training models fully equipped with R/C in both modes one and
two.
So if you are a complete novice and do not own a model yet, there is no
reason why you cannot still Have-a-Go. With
two Chris Foss Uno-Wots, a Precedent hi boy power training models and
a Thunder Tiger Raptor helicopter on the power site, a Great Planes Spectra, Pheonix Synergy and a Fun
Start gliders on the slope soaring site.
All of the models are
equipped with a Buddy-Box system, which allows the
instructor to take control if you should find yourself in trouble.
If you are already hand-on or learning a certain manoeuvre, then the
experienced instructors are there to help.
They are all dedicated flyers in their own right, and just love helping
and promoting good safe flying.
The
MAA have a working relationship with Thornwick Bay and Ladram Bay Holiday
Centre, which able us to offer two annual holidays, the week after may day at
Thornwick Bay,
North Yorkshire, England and a week in September at Ladram Bay, Devon, England. Click
here to see what the sites have to offer
Thornwick
Bay,
Ladram Bay.
The holidays have something to offer
all the family and so leave you free
to come and go as you please. The
difference is that
during the day there are organised attractions for the
modellers that only the MAA can offer in this form.
A large room is provided for an indoor building course for those who
would like to learn more about building R/C model aircraft, or just repairing if
needed. A fully stocked model shop
is available for those little bits and pieces or complete kits and radio sets at
a discounted price to MAA members. For
those of you who just want to fly your models there are numerous established
flying locations to offer. There is
also on-site evening entertainment in the club. If you prefer, we offer seminars and guest speakers
representing various model aviation trade topics and demonstrations on “how
to”. There is even a R/C simulator for you to brush up on what you have
leant during the day, or just for enjoyment.
The
power-flying site for both holidays are situated within a few miles of the camps
and they are flat, well maintained and established flying sites.
There is a choice of several soaring sites available locally, which
covers the majority of wind directions.
Each
flying site has its own Chief Flying Instructor and Flying Instructors.
Indoor flight is carried out in the hall and, although this can be a
fairly restricted area, IFO model and a couple of fun fly designs have flown
quite capably and safely.
