    NEWSLETTER JUNE 2006

Welcome to the latest edition of the newsletter

JOHN DENNIS

It is our sad task to inform you that John passed away suddenly on Sunday April 30th just 4 months after his wife Sue. Only the previous day he had been enjoying a day out aero towing with Roger Knights.  He was a real character and both he and Sue are sad losses to the MAA.  They will be sadly missed on the slopes and power field on the holidays that they both so steadfastly supported and by everyone in the Association.

MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS

All memberships and insurances are now due for renewal, having expired on 1st June 2006.

We have had notification from the insurance Company that for this year at least there will be no increase in premiums, and therefore this years membership fees will stay the same.  However the insurance will increase next year partly due to the loss of our ‘no claims’ and therefore the membership subscription will have to be increased to reflect this from the renewal date next year (1st June 2007).

A proposal to this effect will be put to the Annual General Meeting.  The exact fees are not yet determined as we are awaiting communication from the insurance brokers, but it is hoped that it will be minimal and certainly no more than the BMFA rates.

INSURANCE

Whilst on the subject, it is imperative and a requirement of the insurance company that the MAA be notified by any member who intends to fly at a public display either as an individual or part of a club or engage in any type of ‘display’ flying of the date, time and venue of such activity and also the details of the organisation responsible for putting on the event.  This information should be IN WRITING and well before the event.  Please also specify if the event/organisers are also covered by any other insurance.

PLEASE BE SPECIFIC AND ACCURATE ON THIS

NEWSLETTERS

It becomes very difficult after a while to keep thinking up stuff to put in the newsletter other than the usual.  Contributions from members will therefore be very welcome and I shall be ecstatic.

Send your contributions to Caroline at the usual address. If sending on disc please write in Word and send pictures in jpeg format.  We do have access to colour printing facilities that we can use.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

As this is the last newsletter before the AGM this is the formal notification.

The AGM will be held on Sunday 10th September 2006 at 8.30pm in the Three Rocks Pub, Ladram Bay during the Devon holiday.

Only persons who are members as at 1st September will be eligible to participate and vote at the AGM.

Any proposals must be made in writing duly proposed and seconded by current members and be delivered to the Chairman by 1st September.

Proposals for committee posts must likewise be made in writing proposed and seconded by current members and must contain the written consent of the nominee who again must be a current member and be delivered to the Chairman by 1st September.

The current committee have indicated a willingness to serve a further term.

DEVON 2006

This is the final chance to book and/or pay for the Devon holiday which will run from 9thth to 16th September.  It will again be held at Ladram Bay after the very favourable response both from members and the camp managers to our visits in 2004 and 2005.  All monies must be paid immediately as we have to hand them over to the site.  Forms are available from Caroline Scoles at the address at the end of this newsletter.  The venue is Ladram Bay near Budleigh Salterton and is not a Haven site.  The units are of the same type but at half the price as Haven. Prices for 5Star units are from £230.  The camp has passed on responsibility for administering the bookings to us so there is no provision for booking direct.

We will again be having a group meal during the week, Bruce the chef has agreed to put on a carvery again.

We will also be having both the raffle and blind auction and donations of prizes are always very welcome.

As the flying and gliding sites are away from the camp, own transport is essential.

FILEY 2006

A successful advertising campaign in the modelling press resulted in an upsurge in enquiries and bookings for the 2006 event.  It was pleasing to see many new faces both on the flying site and on the car track.  It was a very successful week and the weather was reasonably kind-well to the glider lads it was!  Makes a change!  Flying was mainly on Filey Brig and Reighton with the occasional trip to Flamborough and it was good to see the gliding CFI, Dave Scoles back in harness.  We were joined on the week by Colin McGinn from Flightpower/Rotorworld who demonstrated their Lithium Polymer batteries and electric flight products and who is writing a couple of reviews for the modelling press on the joys of the holiday.  An enjoyable group meal was held in the on site Chinese Restaurant that was very well received.  The power site was again at Bridlington Aerodrome and our thanks go to Blair and George for all their help.  The power lads were also treated to full size flying and parachute dropping and some crazy antics from the full size pilots.

The site was under the control of the new power CFI, Maurice Partington with assistance from another new instructor to Filey though not new to the holidays-Brian Cooper.

As last year the helicopters shared the power site under the beady eye of Derek Stowe.

The airfield has already been booked for next year.

At the car track it was business as usual for John and Barry Abbott and Dave Richards.  Those of you who saw it will agree that the car track was stunning and a great deal of time and effort had been put into its design and construction.

Numbers were up on previous years and we hope that this trend will continue.

FILEY 2007

Advance warning on next year’s event.

It will be held from Friday 11th –Friday 18thMay 2007.

We have already reserved the units and booking forms are now available from the usual address. Unfortunately we will not be putting the booking forms onto the website as we have to monitor their issue.

A and B Certificates

It must be remembered that the holidays are not to be used as a vehicle for obtaining A and B certificates. Our instructors, some of which are BMFA examiners, value their qualifications and abuse of the conditions relating to the issue of A and B awards could cause the BMFA to withdraw the qualification from the examiner.  Please do not therefore put either the MAA or the individual examiner in an embarrassing position.  There are very strict rules imposed by the BMFA in relation to taking the tests outside of your own club which have recently be reiterated to all Chief Examiners.  If you are not sure what these rules are please speak to Dave Scoles, our gliding CFI who is a BMFA Chief Examiner.  His decision on whether there is an eligibility to take the test will be final.  In any case you will need to bring a letter signed by your club secretary with you confirming that the club has no objection to us carrying out the test.
