MODEL AVIATORS ASSOCIATION

 THORNWICK BAY HOLIDAY WEEK 2008

SATURDAY MAY 10TH TO SAturday MAY 17TH 2008

INFORMATION SHEET

The week will run from Saturday 10th May until Saturday 17th May 2008 and will combine both the MAA We will be providing facilities for powered aircraft, electrics, gliders, helicopters. Experienced MAA instructors will man all sites at the appropriate times.

BOOKING

Booking forms are available from the MAA on receipt of an SAE from the address at the end of this information sheet. All bookings must be made through the MAA into Haven accommodation or their touring site. This is essential in order for us to be able to negotiate favourable prices and to ensure that these holidays will continue. This year again we will be dealing directly with the management at the park and as a result have been able to negotiate substantially reduced prices due to our pre-booking blocks of units.

SITE PASSES

Due to legislation regarding the operation of holiday parks only persons booked into Thornwicks own accommodation or the touring site will be allowed free access to the park and the relevant passes will be issued on arrival. These passes are required in order to gain entry to our meeting rooms, and to participate in our evening activities including the auction as our room is within the main entertainment complex. Park security officers are instructed to remove any person without a pass from the site. We stress that this a legal and policy decision by Thornwick and is completely outside the control of the MAA

POWER FIELD

This year the power site is again at Bridlington Aerodrome at Burton Fleming. Approx 8 miles from the camp Maps can be provided at the briefing. This is an active airstrip operated by British Skydiving.  We have been offered the use of the clubroom which includes toilets, showers, cafeteria, bar, games room and TV during the day. This is a superb site with ample room for power and helicopter to operate together. Instructors will be in radio contact with the skydiver pilots when they are operational and it is therefore imperative that you land immediately if requested by our instructors to do so. There will be a flying fee of £10 per person for the week. Flying passes will be issued on receipt of the fee and will be checked by instructors throughout the week. Any one who does not have a valid pass will be asked to leave the power field. Maurice Partington and Brian Cooper will man the power field.

PLEASE NOTE THAT OWN TRANSPORT IS NEEDED TO REACH THE FLYING SITE

GLIDING SITES

Dependant on wind conditions these will either be Reighton Sands, Flamborough or Filey Brig. Approx distances from camp are 2 miles, 10 miles and 4 miles respectively.  We must stress that flying at the Hole of Horcum and Levisham is NOT permitted and anyone flying there is doing so without the sanction of the organisers and at their own risk. Notices detailing the site for the day will be posted at the organiser’s chalet and shop chalet by 09.45 hrs daily.

Gliding will be under the control of our gliding CFI, Dave Scoles

PLEASE NOTE ALL GLIDING SITES ARE OFF CAMP AND OWN TRANSPORT IS REQUIRED

HELICOPTERS

Again the helicopters will share the power field. Helicopters will be under the control of Derek Stowe.  Dependant on the numbers of helicopters participating a time slot system of attendance at the site may be imposed if insufficient numbers warrant the manning of it all day

ELECTRICS

These can be flown at either the power or gliding sites but we ask that ‘noisy’ models e.g. Twinjets etc only be flown at the power site

TRAINING

All the sites will have experienced instructors available between 10.00 and 17.00 hrs daily depending on the weather and training can be arranged between these times. If you require help please make yourself known to the relevant CFI at the Saturday briefing

FREQUENCIES

Please have all your crystals with you to avoid congestion on the pegboard. The permitted frequencies for aircraft are 27 MHz and 35 MHz.

The permitted frequencies for cars are 27mhz and 40mhz.Again please try to have changes of frequencies with you to avoid clashes and ease race planning. Final decisions on frequencies will be at the discretion of the Chief Instructor but it is the intention to use all frequencies on all sites wherever possible

PEGBOARDS

There will be a pegboard in use at each site. The power site system will be explained at the briefing. The gliding site uses the peg ON system so you need to bring a peg with your name and frequency on with you

The car Chief Instructor will explain at the car briefing the system he proposes to use

BRIEFINGS

These will be kept to the minimum and will take place at 0930 hrs on Saturday in the meeting room

EVENING ACTIVITIES

A programme of evening activities is being prepared and we hope to have the exclusive use of a room every evening. We hope to be able to have a bar open. The usual raffle will take place and any donations of prizes would be welcomed.

MODELLING GOODS

A fully stocked model shop will be on site with opening hours to be posted. Haven Holidays will not sanction any other form of trading, commercial or otherwise of model goods on the site with the exception of the authorised shop and the bring and buy and auction evenings

NEXT YEAR
